DESERT

DESERT
As the temperature soared until we could feel our blood boiling. The fiery sun had attained its maximum height and dry sweltering winds swooshed from one end of the horizon to the other. Not even a wisp of cloud was   there to soften the harsh sun rays which scorched our skin.

Salty sweat rolled down our face, dripping endlessly from the nose and the chin. Our eyelashes saturated, until the weight of the sweat trickled down and sharply stung the eyes, turning them blood red. My summer shirt and trousers got overwhelmingly sticky and hot, drenching every single part of my body in discomfort. The blowing sand accumulated in my hair, making them stiff like cactus thorns. My tongue felt being covered in dry sand, and the lower lip cracking in the zero humidity atmospheres.

The rippling sand upon one another stretched as far as our vision would allow us, rolling upon one another. Nothing else was seen in the relatively flat land, not even a speck of rock or any signs of human civilization. The sky was a solid shade of light blue all over with no variations. The heart escaping the shimmering sand along with the heat from the sun sandwiched us in an open sauna.
As sweat dripped from my face onto the sand, it would evaporate in a matter of two to three seconds. On the edge of the barren land, satisfying mirages formed. So unfortunate were we that we could only dream of an oasis with lush, velvety grass, forgetting that we yet had seven more days till we could refill our water bottles.
