TEEN DEPRESSION
During
this stage of a teen’s life the changing emotions we feel are usually dismissed
as the hormonal havoc going inside our bodies. This is mostly true but in some
cases it’s deeper. Instead of a regular mood swing, a teen can be unhappy for a
very long time, in such a cases it is known as depression.
Depression
can be because of several factors, among them are;
·
poor grades ,
·
social status in school
·
family issues
·
Struggles with their sexuality.
·
loss of loved ones
·
poor relationship with friends
Whatever
the reason, if a teen does not improve in his/her moods and has taken to
isolation , it’s probably teen
depression.
The
Symptoms vary but include the following;
·
Erratic behavior.
·
Apathy ,
·
Irresponsible behavior ( skipping school),
·
Rapid weight loss or gain ,
·
Withdrawal from friends
·
Preoccupation with death and dying.
If you
suspect your friend has depression , the
only way to know for sure would be taking them to a healthcare facility . If the
teen has depression, medications and psychotherapy along with the support of
family and friends will help the teen into the road to recovery.
There
is a darker side to teen depression. It can cause the teen to think the only
escape is death. Depression can make problems seem overwhelming and the
emotional pain unbearable.
Symptoms
showing that a teen has become suicidal include the following;
·
expressing hopelessness for the future,
·
giving up on themselves ( talks as if no
one cares)
·
abusing
drugs or alcohol for relief ,
·
Prepares for death i.e giving away
favorite possessions, writes goodbye letters or writing wills.
Teen
depression is a serious and real thing. If you ever see your friend displaying
the symptoms mentioned, report it to their parent/ guardian. Because if you don’t,
it could eventually lead to their death. If you do , you may have prevented
another death which could have been
saved.
